Upwork Inc. does not provide viewpoint protections for its employees but has not publicly canceled business relationships based on views or beliefs. Upwork provides a benefits package for employees which covers transgender medical procedures for covered employees and dependents, including children. It also uses sex and gender ideology criteria in employee recruitment, vendor selection, and philanthropic support. Upwork refuses to donate to organizations “whose values or missions are in conflict” with its own. Since Upwork’s nondiscrimination policy includes sexual orientation and gender identity, some religious charities would be excluded from its charitable giving. In 2024, Upwork "launched a mobile-compatible benefits app and our new 2024 benefits guide, which features dedicated information for caregivers and LGBTQ+ team members". Upwork prioritizes LGBTQ groups in its foundation giving initiatives. However, Upwork has not used its lobbying for ideological purposes. For these reasons, Upwork Inc. receives a Medium Risk rating.
