Nordstrom scored a 100 out of 100 on the 2023-2024 Corporate Equality Index (CEI) from the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), a political stakeholder group. By complying with the HRC’s controversial demands, Nordstrom increases the risk of dividing employees, alienating customers and harming shareholders. It also uses sex and gender ideology criteria in employee recruitment, vendor selection, marketing, and philanthropic support. Nordstrom forces employees to undergo multiple ideological trainings and uses its reputation, corporate funds, and political influence to support controversial sex and gender ideologies, organizations, and legislation. The company provides a benefits package for employees which covers travel/lodging costs for an abortion and transgender medical procedures for covered employees and dependents, including children. America First Legal filed a letter with the EEOC requesting a civil rights investigation into Nordstrom over discriminatory practices in hiring. The company supports the Equality Act and has opposed a Georgia election security bill. Nordstrom opposed various state and local legislation intended to protect parental rights, girls’ sports, bathroom facilities, and gendered spaces. The company created a Pride Month campaign in support of the Hetrick-Martin Institute. Nordstrom is a member of the “Don’t Ban Equality” business coalition, which advocates against any abortion restrictions because they are “bad for business”. The company's CEO, Erik Nordstrom, denounced various states’ legislative efforts to protect election integrity and security. Nordstrom’s CEO, signed the CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion pledge, which includes a commitment to promote DEI through bias education training in the workplace. The company has pledged $5 million to the Black Lives Matter movement and related causes, including the Black Lives Matter Global Foundation and the National Urban League. Nordstrom is a Gold sponsor of the HRC. The company has partnered with a Seattle-based Pride organization focused on programs for youths under the age 18. For these reasons, Nordstrom receives a High Risk rating.
