John W. Thompson

John W. Thompson is a partner at Lightspeed Venture Partners since 2018. He has over 40 years of experience in the technology industry, including several leadership positions at IBM in sales, marketing, and software development. He also served as CEO and Director of Virtual Instruments and was the Chairman and CEO of Symantec for 10 years. Thompson currently serves on the board of directors for Illumina. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Florida A&M University and a master’s degree in Management Science from MIT’s Sloan School of Management. Thompson joined the Microsoft board in February 2012 as an independent director and served as lead independent director and board chair during his tenure.
