I think in hindsight, there would have been a lot of better ways to handle affirmative action, both the debate, the implementation. But dare I say it's a policy that worked for African American communities. Affirmative action helped African Americans move into the middle class and have a stake in the success of democracy. We have to think about in this Prop 209 era, how do we ensure people have access to opportunities so that they can really feel like the success of democracy is in my best interest and not gravitate to some of the people who really want to tear down this system? That, dare I say, is the best one ever built."
